Visiting Penlee House this Summer

Penlee House is delighted to be able to welcome visitors back. As you will expect, there will be some changes.

We have measures in place to keep you and our team of dedicated staff and volunteers safe. Please be patient with us, as some things will not be the same as normal. It is important that you read and familiarise yourself with these guidelines to help you to prepare for your visit and to ensure that you are not disappointed on your arrival.

Please do not visit Penlee House if you are displaying Coronavirus symptoms.

From 20 July, please pre-book your visit on our bookings page. This applies to all visitors including Penzance Pass holders and Friends of Penlee House.

There are no cloakroom facilities at Penlee House

We will not have facilities for storing any luggage, bags, coats or umbrellas. This is to prevent our staff handling your luggage and to protect against the spread of infection. Please carry all of your personal belongings throughout your visit. Please remove large rucksacks and carry these by your side. Large bags or suitcases should not be brought to Penlee House, and you will not be able to bring them into the Gallery with you.

On a wet day, please bring a plastic bag or cover to carry wet umbrellas and coats in. A cover for your umbrella or coat will help to keep our paintings safe, by reducing humidity in the galleries.

Please wear a face covering if you are able to

Please wear a face covering if you are able to. Face coverings will be mandatory in shops from 24 July and their use is strongly recommended in other enclosed spaces, such as museums and galleries. Further information about face coverings can be found on the government website.

We will have limited toilet facilities for the foreseeable future

We are not able to open all of our toilet facilities. This is to ensure we can maintain social distancing. We will have one disabled/gents toilet available and one ladies toilet available. We will clean these twice daily. When the toilets are being cleaned, they will not be available to the public.

Entry to the toilet is via the main entrance to Penlee House, for all guests. This is so that we can manage the number of people who will be congregating in the waiting area outside the toilet. Occasionally, you may be asked to wait outside before there is capacity for you to enter the waiting area for the toilet.

Other toilet facilities are available in Penzance. Visit the Penzance Council site for more information.

We will do all we can to keep the toilets as clean and as safe as possible, and will provide hand sanitiser that you can use before and after your visit.

Please stay two metres apart from our staff, volunteers and other guests.

Sometimes, this may mean that we need to restrict which areas you can go into, until there is space for you to enter those areas. This is to protect everyone.

Your visit will be a one way flow

We have created a one-way system around the gallery. This is so that we can monitor visitor flow and we can enable people to keep a distance of 2 metres.

We have stair and lift access to the upper floors

Please only use the lift with other members of your household.

Please bear in mind that the step lift from Gallery 5 to the Museum is not suitable for motorised wheelchairs or scooters. We have a wheelchair available for you to borrow and can clean this with disinfectant before you use it.

We won’t have pencils, art materials, clipboards or other shared things out in the gallery

But please bring your own pencils and paper!

We won’t be doing family activities for a while

We know…this makes us sad too. But we can’t guarantee that these activities will be safe for everyone, so we have instead put a load of fun creative activities on our website

We are grateful for your support

As with most businesses, it’s not been an easy time for us this year, having to close for Covid-19 has severely impacted our income. Every penny you give us in admissions, every pound you spend in our shop and café helps to keep us going through this tough time and we are so grateful for your support.

If you want to support us even further, please consider becoming a Friend of Penlee House.
