He joined the Royal Air Force in 1936 and by the outbreak of the Second World War had become a bomber with 83 Squadron. At the age of 23, he was promoted to the rank of wing commander, being posted back to Bomber Command. In May 1943, Gibson was selected to carry out the highly dangerous Dambusters Raid, using the Barnes Wallis 'bouncing bomb'. For his role in this mission, Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died the following year

View From Madron Carn

Oil Painting

By: Pentreath, Richard Thomas

View of Madron Carn showing the workhouse, which was built in 1838 as a result of the country being divided into Unions as a result of the Poor Law Act of 1834. The Act abolished the poorhouse system, ended the Church's participation in official poor relief and substituted for it a system of poor law 'Unions', each of which was required to set up a 'well regulated' workhouse.

The Rain It Raineth Every Day

Oil Painting

By: Garstin, Norman

This title is taken from Shakespeare, most notably from the play King Lear. The painting was sent to the Royal Academy in 1889 but was not hung. It is believed that the committee thought the painting too 'French' in style. When the painting first came into the possession of Penzance Town Council, it was not displayed as it was decided that tourists would be put off by the depiction of Penzance in the rain. Nowadays, it is one of the most popular works in the collection.
