Oil Painting

View of Madron Carn showing the workhouse, which was built in 1838 as a result of the country being divided into Unions as a result of the Poor Law Act of 1834. The Act abolished the poorhouse system, ended the Church's participation in official poor relief and substituted for it a system of poor law 'Unions', each of which was required to set up a 'well regulated' workhouse.
