Hughes, Robert

Robert Morson Hughes was one of the second generation of Newlyn School artists, more properly known as the Lamorna group. Like fellow artists and friends the Garniers and the Heaths, he and his wife met while studying at the Forbes’ school in Newlyn.

Biography

Robert Hughes – 1873 – 1953

Born in Withyham, Sussex, Hughes studied at Lambeth School of Art and South London Technical Art School. In 1909 he came to Newlyn to study with Stanhope Forbes and there met his wife to be, Eleanore Waymouth. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1910 to 1938.

Hughes was friendly with many of the second generation artists, Laura and Harold Knight, Munnings and Lamorna Birch to name but a few. Robert and Eleanore Hughes moved to Lamorna c.1910 and lived at ‘Chyangweal’ from 1911.
