Seal's
Colony:
Richard Copeland Weatherby (1881 - 1953), known to his friends as 'Seal'. Being of independent means, he never depended on the income from sales of paintings, but nevertheless exhibited 40 times at the Royal Academy and also showed at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings are characterised by the vigorous brushwork and his work is often likened to that of Sir Alfred Munnings, who was a close friend. This exhibition included work by Munnings along with that of Weatherby's one-time tutor, Stanhope Forbes, and his companions Lamorna Birch, Harold and Laura Knight, Harold Harvey, Frank Heath, Stanley Gardiner and Midge Bruford. Curated in collaboration with David Bradfield, author of a new publication on the artist.
