Of all the painters associated with the Newlyn School, Stanhope Forbes is by far the best known. Born in 1857, Forbes died in his ninetieth year in 1947, so this exhibition celebrated his 150th birthday and commemorated the 60th anniversary of his death. Forbes arrived in Newlyn in 1884 and soon settled permanently in the village, quickly becoming a leading force within the expanding artists' colony. With his wife, the fellow artist Elizabeth Forbes, he set up a School of Painting in the village in 1899, bringing a new generation of artists to the area and extending his influence well into the 20th century. Intended as the precursor to a future major retrospective exhibition, this focus exhibition included selected loans from public and private collections throughout the UK as well as Penlee House's own, recently acquired works. Key exhibits included the iconic 'Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach' (Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery), and 'Off to the Fishing Grounds' and 'A Street in Brittany' (National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside).
