Richard T. Pentreath (1806 - 1869)
This one-man focus exhibition celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth, in Mousehole, of the artist Richard Thomas Pentreath. Pentreath received his early art training while a servant at Clowance, one of the seats of the St. Aubyns, and later as an attendant to Sir R. Vyvyan of Trelowarren. Acclaimed in his day, he was a popular portrait and landscape painter and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1853 and 1868. Many of his works were produced as steel engravings and were published by Vibert & Tonkin and Besley in Exeter. Penlee House owns four works by Pentreath, two landscapes and two portraits, which were included in this exhibition alongside a large selection of the artist's work from public and private collections.
